Materia inscripta 02 forms part of a research project that arose following the exhibition prize awarded by the Altamira National Museum at the ARTESANTANDER 2025 contemporary art fair. The project aims to link contemporary art with the Altamira National Museum through a sculptural and installation-based proposal.
Materia inscripta draws inspiration from elements of the Altamira caves, such as the ‘stratigraphy’ of the excavations - a system of ‘layers of time’ - and the idea of the loss of codes and information that prevent the original meaning of the paintings from being deciphered.
The project draws on research into bioceramics to create works constructed from fine, delicate layers of translucent porcelain. Materiality, delicacy, fragility and light take centre stage in a visual sense, moving beyond any symbolic representation to enter the literal space of the viewer.
Set against the backdrop of the Altamira Caves, the work opens up a space for conversation and imagination through form and material.
